SpeedSeries categories in action this weekend at SMSP

Three familiar Shannons SpeedSeries categories will continue their seasons this weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park as part of the Repco Supercars Championship round.

Taking to the track for the fourth time this year will be the Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS, while the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge will hold its third round before joining the Shannons SpeedSeries schedule at Queensland Raceway next month.

In what is such an important stretch of races for the enthralling title race, there are plenty of storylines to keep an eye out for both categories.

In the GT’s, Geoff Emery and Austrian Max Hofer will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the standings after taking out top honours at the previous round at Phillip Island, but they will have the likes of Liam Talbot and Fraser Ross on their tail.

Yasser Shahin and Garnet Patterson will also be in the mix, while the return of the two Triple Eight Race Engineering entries will ensure the rest of the grid will have to be on top of their game throughout.

It has also been announced that Mike Sheargold will make a miraculous return to the category just six weeks after undergoing major bowel cancer removal surgery.

The GT category will have two practice sessions on Friday before an afternoon qualifying session will set the grid for the two one-hour races across the weekend.

Sydney Motorsport Park will also kick off an important month for the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, as a win for current leader Marco Giltrap could ensure the New Zealander heads to QR with an even bigger buffer in the title race.

Contrary to Giltrap’s title ambitions, Kiwi Ronan Murphy will be desperate to close the gap to his compatriot after previously picking up his first series race win at Tasmania back in May.

Porsche fans will be treated to three races across the weekend, with the first taking place on Saturday afternoon before the final two races will be held on Sunday.

While they will not feature at Queensland Raceway, the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship will also continue its season this weekend, with the absence of series leader Joey Mawson certain to shake things up at the top of the standings.

The Sydney round will also see two Supercheap Auto TCR Australia stars in Ben Bargwanna and Kody Garland join the category for the first time in 2023, while Aaron Love will also join the grid in the familiar white ACM Finance / 88 Racing entry in Mawson’s absence.

Much like the Porsches, Australia’s premier open-wheel racing category will also feature three races across the weekend, with the first outing on Saturday afternoon before races two and three on Sunday.

All three categories will take the track at Sydney Motorsport Park as support categories for the Repco Supercars Championship on 28-30 July.

The fifth round of the Shannons SpeedSeries will take place at Queensland Raceway on 11-13 August.
