Trico Trans Am Series
James Moffat has wrapped up the opening round of 2024 Trico Trans Am Series season at Race Sandown with his third victory, sewing up the clean sweep.
In what was a dramatic final race for the category, which saw a multiple-car pile-up four corners into the first lap, Moffat ended up enjoying a clean run throughout the 17-lap race to cross the line in top spot.
The race served up its fair share of drama, with the five-car pile-up just the start of it all, with Nash Morris, Elliot Cleary and Todd Hazelwood all suffering significant issues later in the race – Hazelwood having a day to forget despite racking up the fastest lap.
Despite avoiding all the drama, Moffat still had to battle for the win as he defended his place against Elliot Cleary following a late safety car intervention while Jackson Rice rounded out the podium.
As a result of his second place for the weekend, Cleary took out the first ever Young Gun of the Round Award, capping off a solid weekend for the young New South Welshman, while Joshua Webster took out the Pro Am round victory.
Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series
Ben Bargwanna has left a round of the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series on top of the standings for the first time in his career, after taking out the final race of the weekend.
Bargwanna picked up his second win of the round thanks to a highly mature performance in the final race of the weekend where he led the field on every lap.
Finishing behind Bargwanna was reigning champion Josh Buchan, while Jordan Cox rounded out the race podium – the trio remaining unchanged for the whole 17-lap affair.
Earlier in the day, Cox picked up his first win for almost two years, after taking out the round’s second race with an incredible performance.
Starting from P6, a remarkable opening lap saw him climb from P6 to top spot in some quick-fire overtakes, before he spent the rest of the race defending a stubborn Clay Richards.
Richards did everything he could to get the victory, but couldn’t get it done – the Victorian still managed to sew onto second spot defending his place over series debutant Ryan Casha.
Meguiar’s Australian Production Cars
Dean Campbell had a trouble-free run in Meguiar’s Australian Production Cars’ fourth and final race on Sunday afternoon – with the BMW M2 driver sealing a six second win.
Adding a third victory to his and teammate Cameron Crick’s two wins from Saturday’s action, Campbell produced a solid 19 laps to fend off any challenges from the drivers behind.
His main rival Simon Hodges ended up finishing fourth place after a pair of podiums yesterday, the BMW M4 driver dropping down to fourth with just two laps to go.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t make up any further ground and had to settle for fourth place 15 seconds behind Iain and Grant Sherrin, who rounded out the podium after a tight battle.
Despite the fourth place, Hodges, and teammate Jayden Ojeda finished the weekend in second place behind Campbell and Crick, while Grant Sherrin ended up third overall.
Giti Australian Formula Open
Race one winner Miles Bromley looked on track to secure a clean sweep in the final race of the weekend, only for a moment of misfortune to ruin everything.
Bromley had dominated the category all weekend, having added a second win to his tally in the series’ opening race of Sunday’s action, before a mishap late in the race saw him tumble down the order.
Capitalising on Bromley’s fall down the order was Kyle Evans, who slotted into the lead and remained there for the rest of the race, holding off Ryan Macmillan and reigning champion Trent Grubel in the process.
Grubel’s third place was a fantastic return to form after he failed to finish the second race, while Macmillan made up four places after he started from P6.
It was contrasting results for race two’s third place getter Ryan Astley, who fell from P3 to P5, finishing behind the fourth placed Beau Russell.
