It’s not just drivers who will be making history in South Australia when The Bend Motorsport Park hosts its first ever motor sport event this month, with CAMS on the lookout for officials for the event. Australia’s newest track will host the opening round of the Shannons from 13-15 April.
Seven categories have been confirmed with the first endurance leg of CAMS Australian GT Championship being the major drawcard.
With the circuit set to utilise its largest 7.7km configuration during the weekend, flag marshals are the biggest requirement for the event, with 35 turns and 26 flag points to man..
CAMS’ 2016 Australian Official of the Year, Rob Thiry, believes being part of the historic even was a once in a lifetime opportunity that should not be passed up.
“With Tailem Bend and the first race meeting literally weeks away, I never imagined that a world class motor sport facility would be built in South Australia,” Thiry said.
“I am not sure we will ever see another circuit of this scale be made in Australia again in my lifetime so it’s a unique opportunity.
“I was lucky enough to be involved in a number of Grand Prix and circuits overseas and this one definitely has the wow-factor.
“A camping area is available for the officials, so you will be able to stay at the circuit overnight and get the bragging rights of being at the first ever event at The Bend.”
The new track is an important development in Australian motor sport as it is hoped to attract a number of international events in the near future, bringing in tourists from around the world.
“For South Australia and as well as all motor sport officials, The Bend represents the first permanent circuit built in about twenty years,” Thiry added.
“From its use of the natural elevations and variety of corners, the circuit will be a learning curve, not only for the competitors but for the officials as well.”
Apart from the opportunity to attend the historic event, officials will also be offered the chance to attend a training program recognised by the Australian Sports Commission.
CAMS Officials licence holders can apply to work at any event run by FIA affiliated sporting bodies around the world, as well as any CAMS affiliated event in Australia.
