Another Supercars regular has joined the 2018 CAMS Australian GT Championship, just days before the much-anticipated Shannons Nationals opening round.
Garth Tander will join 2017 CAMS Australian GT Champion Geoff Emery as the reigning champion looks to catch up to competition leader Jaie Robson.
The multiple Bathurst 1000 winner will co-pilot Emery’s #1 Valvoline Audi R8 LMS at The Bend’s debut motor sport event, a car in which Tander will be familiar with.
“I know the Audi quite well now, and the MPC guys do a fantastic job, so it’ll be cool. It’ll be on, it always is,” Tander said.
“The Audi’s always competitive – that’s the great thing about GT3 racing, the balance of performance keeps it competitive.
“The new track will keep it interesting, I know (David) Reynolds is driving the Mercedes, Shane (van Gisbergen)’s there in the McLaren, so it’ll be a bit of fun with those guys.
“When we do these races the guys at the front always drive these cars really hard and really quickly, hopefully we’re part of it.”
The CAMS Australian GT Endurance field will be the first ever to drive on the enormous 7.7km GT track, the second largest in the world.
With the GTs on centre stage, drivers will battle it out across a mammoth 500km in two races, occurring over two days on top of practice and qualifying sessions.
While Tander is a major addition for the GTs, he isn’t the only big name to join the race as van Gisbergen will lineup with Tony Quinn in the Mariani Beef Jerky McLaren 650S GT3.
Adding to the already highly competitive 21 car grid, reigning Bathurst 1000 champion Reynolds will partner with GT championship leader Robson.
The CAMS Australian GT Endurance Championship is part of the Shannons Nationals at the historic opening of The Bend Motor Sport Park on 13-15 April.
