Shields looking forward to Porsche SpeedSeries return

Aron Shields is looking forward to a return to Queensland Raceway when the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia joins the Shannons SpeedSeries for the first time in 2023.

Having held two rounds in Phillip Island and Tasmania already, the popular one-make series will have a short burst of rounds with appearances at Sydney Motorsport Park with Supercars and then Queensland Raceway for the fifth round of the SpeedSeries season.

While Shields was raised and currently resides out of New South Wales, he has been racing for the Queensland-based TekworkX team for the past two seasons which has given him plenty of testing experience around the Ipswich-based circuit.

Not only that, but it’s fair to say the circuit holds a special place in the 21-year-old’s heart as he also scored his first-ever podium finish there in 2022, in what was only his second round of racing in the category.

“I have done many laps around QR, it’s been my main testing track for the last two years, so I’ve certainly cut a lap or two around there,” Shields said.

“I loved racing there last year; it is where I picked up my first podium, so it holds a lot of memories for me. But hopefully this year we can get to that top step.

“It was an awesome event and one of the biggest races in terms of crowds, I really enjoyed it.

“It was such a great vibe, lots of people, lots of spectators and overall, a great weekend.

“It’s a very unique track and it offers some very good racing, most of the corners are right-handers and there are heaps of spots to cross back people so the racing is good.”

With the category joining a solid list of categories as part of the Shannons SpeedSeries, Shields was certain they will fit right in with an already exciting lineup.

“Porsche is a fan favourite, the noise is amazing and we have a big grid,” Shields explained.

“It really brings the fans along and they are always checking the cars out which is great.

“I’ve been watching SpeedSeries this year, Tasmania, Phillip Island and Winton have all been great and I can’t wait to join.”

Aron Shields and the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge will join the Shannons SpeedSeries schedule at Queensland Raceway on 11-13 August.
