Sue Hughes and her son Jon Collins have shared a podium for the first time in their respective careers at Phillip Island with Radical Australia Cup.
The duo steered the Hughes Motorsport Radical across two races during the recent Shannons Nationals weekend, with Jon clinching runner-up spot to Yasser Shahin and James Winslow in the opening race.
The weekend’s second race didn’t prove as fruitful for the pair, but a finish was enough to secure second place for the round. Hughes currently sits in sixth place in the outright standings, and Collins in 15th.
“It was an awesome weekend, it was good to be back in a Radical,” Collins said.
“I haven’t driven an aero car in a bit over a year so it took a little while to get back into the swing of things. Unfortunately things didn’t work out with the Safety Car, but aside from that it’s been a fantastic weekend.”
With a considerable height duo, Hughes reckoned her son’s tuition throughout the weekend was of a greater advantage.
“To accommodate Jon we had to move the seat back, and that turns out to be where it was best suited to me too,” Hughes said.
“We had a great time, he pushed me all the way, it was a fantastic weekend.”
Though Phillip Island’s race wasn’t the first time the mother and son had shared a Radical, with their last outing together in 2013 at Sydney Motorsport Park.
The Radical Australia Cup’s next round will be its season finale at Sydney Motorsport Park on 21–23 September.
