Porsche 944 excited for Shannons opportunity

Porsche fans will be treated to two consecutive weeks of action when the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships completes its double header at The Bend Motorsport Park in October.

Running on the first weekend will be the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, which will feature some of the best young Porsche drivers around the country in the category which features regularly on Shannons events.

On the second weekend, nostalgic racing will take centre stage with the Victorian based Porsche 944 Association confirmed to join the Shannons bill for the second time this year.

Having already featured in the season opener at Phillip Island in March, the category’s addition this October will also mark its second time at the South Australian circuit.

Club President Mark Taubitz was looking forward to being on the national stage and believed his feelings were shared amongst all competitors.

“It’s always great to be on the Shannons bill and there is a lot of excitement building from a lot of competitors,” Taubitz said.

“Not only are we pumped to be at a Shannons event again, but it’s also because we get to go to The Bend, which is a fantastic track.

“A few of us went for the second or third meeting ever there and it was brilliant, so much so that the guys who went have been raving about it to the others and getting them excited.

“There are also a great number of other categories racing that weekend. We are really big fans of the Sports Sedans and we’ve never raced with Aussie Racing Cars so it should be good.

“The series is in a really good place too. In Phillip Island we had a huge entry list, one of the biggest since 2015 and there are few more people coming through with more interest.

“Being on the national stage also helps raise the profile of the club and builds interest around the category once people see what we’re about.”

The series is expecting between 20 and 25 cars entries, COVID dependent, with the big names having all committed, including title hopefuls Cameron Beller and Jamie Westaway who will headline the field.

A racing schedule will be released in the coming weeks, while tickets will go on sale for both events shortly.

The Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships double header takes place at The Bend Motorsport Park on 15-17 October and 22-24 October.
