After a strong outing in the opening weekend of the National Trans Am Series, Owen Kelly has confirmed his place for the second round at Phillip Island.
Behind the wheel of his Fujitsu-backed Ford Mustang, Kelly produced a number of good results as part of the Boost Mobile Race Tasmania event, finishing the opening round third in the standings, before securing a runner-up placing in the non-championship Tasmanian Ten Thousand race the following weekend.
The former NASCAR driver will be aiming to go one better next month and has been handed a major boost with Marcos Ambrose to return as his crew chief.
“We always said after Tassie, we’d assess the ‘fun meter’ and we all came away with a smile on our faces, and Marcos is keen to come back for Phillip Island, so we’re locked in,” said Kelly.
“We’ve been fortunate enough that we’ve strung together a deal with our partners to do it, so it should be good fun.
“I reckon the Trans Ams will be really good at Phillip Island. It will be completely different to what we saw at Symmons Plains and Baskerville, which is great that we get a real mix of circuits.
“I think the circuit will suit them (the Trans Am cars) really well. Lots of opportunities for passing, plenty of power, so I can see it being a great race meeting.”
The series’ second round will take place at the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships’ next month, with 25 cars expected to line up.
Limited tickets are now on sale with up to 3,500 spectator tickets available on both the Saturday and Sunday, and will only be available to pre-purchase – meaning no tickets can be purchased at the gate.

The first Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships round of the year is at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on 12-14 March.
