Gardner extends Radical Cup lead ahead of Race Sydney

Volante Rosso Motorsport junior, Alex Gardner will enter Race Sydney as the hot favourite to take out the Workhorse Radical Cup Australia title after yet another clean sweep of race wins last weekend.

The 16-year-old extended his series lead out to 18 points ahead of the season finale, after taking victory in both of the category’s races at Shell V-Power Motorsport part as part of Shannons Trophy Series.

The result was even more impressive considering Gardner had never actually raced at the popular South Australian circuit before.

There was no second-guessing Gardner’s pace during the early stages of the round, after the Queenslander claimed pole position over his closest title rival in Elliott Schutte on Saturday morning, before he was able to take a comfortable three second win later in the afternoon.

Again, starting from pole position in race two, Gardner led from lights out to the chequered flag to win by six seconds over the West Australian, cementing the round win in the process.

Finishing second on the outright podium for the weekend was Schutte, who secured the position after once again crossing the line behind Gardner in race two.

Rounding out the top three was Victorian Zig Fuhrmeister after finishing in fifth and fourth respectively across the two races.

Having left South Australia with a clean sweep of wins, in addition to victories in the Australian Prototype Series, Gardner was thrilled with his weekend, but knew there was still plenty of work to be done at Race Sydney this November.

“I’m super happy to walk away winning every race in both Radical and Prototype this weekend,” Gardner said.

“I’ve never been to Shell V-Power Park before and it is a super demanding racetrack, very physical and I spent a lot of time in the seat.

“I feel it was one of my best performances – I’ve been working hard on several aspects of my racing approach and was able to maintain that throughout each race.

“My fitness has improved and right now I don’t feel that tired after a big weekend.

“The team at Volante Rosso Motorsport have been amazing in the way that they are working with me and building me to different levels at every race meeting I take part in.

“The Radical title race isn’t over and done with yet and we go to Sydney in the lead, but not won. I’ll be using the next couple of weeks to work on my mental fitness and my physicality to go to that race to continue what I’ve been doing.”
