Evans preparing for Porsche shootout

Jaxon Evans has been confirmed as this year’s Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia representative at the 2018 Porsche Motorsport Junior Programme Shootout.

Following a breakout season in the Porsche championship, Evans has come a long way since making his debut in the 2015 Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia, where he was competing in Class B.

The 22-year old enjoyed a successful outright season in 2016, finishing runner-up, before moving to McElrea Racing in the 2017 Carrera cup season to replace a Europe-bound Matt Campbell, and placing fifth for the season.

This year has seen the Queensland-based New Zealander take a further step forward in his development, occupying top spot in the standings with a 62-point lead, as well as the nomination for the Shootout.

“It’s incredible to be selected as the Carrera Cup Australia nominee for the 2018 Shootout and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to head over to Europe and compete among the best young Carrera Cup talent from around the world,” Evans said.

“It has been a great Carrera Cup season so far but there’s a long way to go between now and the end of the championship.

“We have two incredible events ahead of us – Bathurst and Gold Coast – so I’m looking forward to the remaining races and hopefully finish the season at my home event at the top of the standings. After that, I’ll have full focus on the Shootout event.”

Evans’ current journey through the Porsche ranks almost mirrors that of his former McElrea Racing teammate in Campbell, who used his GT3 Cup Challenge and Carrera Cup experience as a foundation to launch his international career.

Since arriving in Europe, Campbell has excelled in this year’s FIA World Endurance Championship, taking out multiple class round wins, including at the iconic Le Mans.

“Matt is a good friend and I’ve watched his progression through the motorsport ranks very closely.” Evans added.

“To win the Shootout and follow Matt’s pathway through to an international racing career with Porsche is indeed something I want to replicate so I’ll do all I can to prepare and give myself the best opportunity to win the Shootout.”

The Junior Programme Shootout will take place at a yet-to-be-announced circuit in France, following the conclusion of the 2018 Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia season.
