Catching Cooper, Fallon’s Plan

The Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia has reached the halfway point for 2018 with Cooper Murray leading the championship on 461 points after three rounds.

Sitting close in second place is Simon Fallon on 418 points and after some of the most consistent driving all season, a strong result at Queensland Raceway during the Shannons Nationals’ fourth round could put the 18-year-old on top.

In his first season racing in the GT3 Cup Challenge, Fallon is the only driver on the grid to finish in the top five in every race, which includes two race wins and four podium finishes.

Despite finishing second overall in two rounds, a satisfied Fallon still believes that there more to be done, with one factor to his previous success key in what he needs to maintain in order to catch Murray.

“I think it’s a matter of staying focused on what you are doing and not worrying about what the other guys are doing around you,” Fallon explained.

“I’ve made a few mistakes in this area that cost me like in Phillip Island when I was too focused on people behind rather than on my own race.

“Overall I’m pretty happy with how it has been so far. The results have not been too bad, but I just need to work on a few little things as I have been up and down all season.”

For Fallon, catching Murray isn’t the only barrier for a successful weekend, with the Victorian aware that he his limited practice sessions and test days at Queensland Raceway are vital to preparation.

“We haven’t had our best runs at Queensland Raceway, I have only ever driven the F4 up there, so it will be a bit interesting when I go up there in the Porsche for the first time,” Fallon added.

“It’s a lot of high speed stuff which we have been pretty strong with in previous races, so I guess we will just have to wait and see until practice one.

“I am not sure what to expect. It’s one of those things where it’s a matter of just turning up and seeing what happens. You don’t really know how everyone else is going to be until you roll up on the day and get into qualifying.”

Fallon and Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia will begin with a qualifying session that will set up the first of three races on Saturday, 28 July, with the final two races to take place on the Sunday, 29 July.

The Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia fourth round is part of the Shannons Nationals and will take place on 28-29 July at Queensland Raceway, Ipswich.
