Buchan gets prized TCR seat for 2021

HMO Customer Racing have secured the services of young gun Josh Buchan for the 2021 Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series season.

Lining up alongside the team’s regular driver in Nathan Morcom, Buchan will compete in the series behind the wheel of Will Brown’s title winning Hyundai i30 N, as the outgoing inaugural champion joins Erebus Motorsport in the Supercars Championship.

While the 24-year-old has big shoes to fill, he has still enjoyed a successful career of his own right – with victory in the 2019 Bathurst 12 Hour Formula Ford Festival and experience aboard Formula 3 machinery.

With the New South Welshman impressing HMO Customer Racing founder Barry Morcom at the team’s test day at Wakefield Park, Buchan was thrilled with the opportunity at hand.

“I still can’t believe it. I found out not too long ago and it still doesn’t feel real,” Buchan said.

“The Hyundai TCR car is totally its own beast. I was fortunate that I have been able to secure a drive in the Hyundai because out of all of the brands in TCR, it’s one of the strongest. The test at Wakefield Park was great – totally different to anything I’ve driven previously, but I felt that I adapted to it quickly.

“It’s not daunting replacing Will (Brown). The car and the team have proven themselves. HMO is the outfit that everyone wants to be with, so I consider myself fortunate that they’ve signed me up. I’m not taking too much pressure into it, and I feel that if we all do our job, then we’ll be competitive.

“Barry Morcom is a champion of motor racing. He is the guy you want to drive for, so I can’t thank him enough for the chance. And to have a guy like Rob Benson in the squad, he has been pivotal in getting me into the car. I can’t wait for the season to start.”

TCR Australia’s season begins at Symmons Plains for Boost Mobile Race Tasmania on 24–26 January.
