Alfa’s bigger and better Sydney return

After a successful Shannons Nationals debut at Sydney Motorsport Park last year, the Veloce Racing Association will be back again in 2018.

Acting as the fourth round of a five round series, club president, Alfio Musumeci believes competing at the Nationals will add an extra bit of spice into the series.

“Last year, it was really great to be part of, the guys loved it and everything went really smoothly,” Musumeci said.

“This year with a large amount of categories out there, it will be a little bit more hectic, but just as much as fun.

“We are really looking forward to the weekend because the profile of the Shannons Nationals is great for our club.

“We had a lot of hits during the live stream last year, which is a real benefit, so we are hoping that we can have the same for this year.”

While the club itself only made its national debut last year, it has been successfully holding state and local championships since its inception in 2002.

In an attempt to continually grow the series’ profile, Musumeci believes changes were made to the starting formation in order to make the racing more entertaining for everyone.

“We have a set of basic rules where we handicap different models and vehicles to try and get people more competitive at the front of the field,” Musumeci added.

“We have our Group S competitors but then all the other classes are massaged to fit in with our sort of cars.

“This enables our racers to have a real crack making every race more interesting.”

With just two rounds remaining for the year, Darren Harris (Under 2L) currently holds a comfortable lead over Danny Gatto (Nuovo A) and Michael Musumeci (Nuovo B) in the outright standings.

The three drivers also lead their respective classes, while Canberra-based John Burkhart is in prime position to win the Twin Spark Cup and Andrew Wilson the Group S class.

The Veloce Racing Association will be part of the Shannons Nationals this month for their second last round before heading to Eastern Creek for their season finale on 2 – 4 November.
