GT World Challenge to boast bumper field at Phillip Island

The Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Series will welcome a strong entry list for its opening round of the 2024 season, with 17 cars confirmed to take on the famous Phillip Island Circuit.

In what is the fourth season of the season competing in Australia and the first under its current management, SRO Motorsports Australia, there is much anticipation behind this weekend’s Ford Mustang 60 Years Race Phillip Island due to the high calibre of the GT World Challenge field.

The entry list is headlined by reigning Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia series winner Liam Talbot and Supercars ace Chaz Mostert, who will be behind the wheel of one of two Arise Racing GT Ferrari 296 GT3s.

Driving the other Arise Racing GT Ferrari 296 GT3 will be another Supercars star in Jaxon Evans, who will partner up with Elliott Schutte.

There are a host of other big brands and notable names entered in the round, including the two Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo 2s of Brad Schumacher/Will Brown and Mark Rosser/Alex Peroni, while Mercedes has some solid outright contending representation with Jayden Ojeda teaming up with Paul Lucchitti in one AMG GT3, and Declan Fraser parterning with Peter Hackett.

Seven cars are entered in the AM class, with Tony Bates, Ash Samadi and Marc Cini leading the charge.

SRO Australia CEO Ben McMellan was excited for the strong entry list to grace the Phillip Island circuit as part of the Shannons SpeedSeries.

“There’s been great support from the teams and drivers for SRO Australia’s first season at the helm of Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS,” McMellan said.

“It’s the most competitive field that we have seen, with the most outright contenders that have entered a Fanatec GT season. It’s a very exciting line-up of cars and stars.

“We have a batch of new cars that have arrived, and the Ferraris are a big addition to the field. The Ferrari brand is highly prestigious all around the world, so that makes it a real positive for our local fans.

“It’s going to be very hard to pick a winner. There are several entries in both Pro-Am and Am that have the ability to win their class. It’s by far the most competitive field we’ve ever seen in Australia.”

The Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia join a bumper category list at the third Shannons SpeedSeries event for the year, and will have two one-hour races over the course of its opening weekend, with Sunday’s race to be preceded by a free grid walk for fans.

Both races will feature as part of the live and free 7plus broadcast, while Sunday’s race forms part of the free-to-air coverage on 7mate.
