X3 series triple-threat title fight

The Series X3 Club Queensland will host their final round for the year at Morgan Park this weekend, with three drivers all in the running to take the 2018 crown.

Headlining the 22-car field at the season finale is current points leader Frank Mammarella, 2017 champion Brock Giblin and fourth-placed Kadan Olsen.

Richard Peasey currently in third is also in contention for the title, however his absence from the final round this weekend will see him unable to score valuable points.

Mammarella heads into the final round with a 16-point advantage over Giblin and will be keen to secure the title with his first round win for the year, while Giblin will be looking to the become the first driver in the series’ history to win multiple Excel titles.

Consistency has been key for Mammarella, being the only driver throughout the year to claim a top five finish in all four rounds, with his best result coming in the opening round where he placed second to Giblin.

Giblin had a great start to his season, with the 21-year-old taking out the opening round before adding the Nationals round win at Ipswich to his 2018 account, but has been inconsistent throughout the year due to his car failing to finish multiple races in the second and fourth round.

This weekend will see a maximum of 120 points of offer for the fifth and final round of the series, leaving the title fight between Mammarella, Giblin and fourthplaced Olsen, who sits a further 44 points behind the defending champion.

Rounding out the top five in the current standings is Mark Goldspink, with his best result of fourth at the first round.

Only four points separate Goldspink and Round 4’s winner Matthew Broadbent, making the battle for fifth also one to watch.

The series opens up with qualifying on Saturday morning before two races on Saturday afternoon and another two on Sunday.

The 2018 champion will most likely be decided by which Giblin attends the event – the impressive winner of two rounds or the inconsistent one who was been hard be done by in the other rounds.

The Series X3 Club Queensland will be part of the fourth CAMS 2018 Queensland Circuit Racing State Championships taking place on 16-17 November at Morgan Park
