Winton set for five star weekend

Five categories will be part of a blockbuster fifth round of the Shannons Nationals at Winton Motor Raceway in regional Victoria next month.

Headlining the five-strong categories is the CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series,  which enters its final round for 2018. Two 50 minute races will set the stage for a dramatic ending.

The battle for GT Trophy honours will be between three drivers, as current leader Nick Kelly looks to hold onto his small gap over challengers Rio Nugara and Matthew Stoupas.

The newest category to enter the two-day event is the Porsche 944 Challenge, with their appearance the host of their fourth round of a seven round series.

With two round wins each so far this year, Challenge leaders Jamie Westaway and Cameron Beller will continue their battle for outright top spot across three 15-minute races.

The 944s will join fellow Porsche category, the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia, with the Nationals regular returning for its fifth round of the season.

In similar style to the previous Nationals round at Queensland Raceway, the Cup will see competitors on track for three races, starting off with a 50 minute opening race before two 20 minute races rounding out their weekend.

The round is sure to be an entertaining one, with very little separating the series leader Cooper Murray and Simon Fallon, who is fresh off his first round win for the year.

For the first and only time this year, the CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship will hold a special double round, as competitors will take part in six 20 minute races.

The double round marks the halfway point of the seven round championship, with Jayden Ojeda leading outright thanks to his sensational victory in the previous round at Queensland Raceway.

Cameron Shields sits in second place after three rounds, while consistent driving from Ojeda’s teammate Ryan Suhle sees the AGI Sport driver occupy the final spot of the podium.

Also entering the halfway point of their season is the Australian Production Cars Series, which will tail end both days with a spectacular two-hour race.

Record numbers have been part in the ever growing series’ previous two rounds as Beric Lynton and Tim Leahey sit in top spot, after claiming the opening two outright rounds.

It will be a tall order for anyone to remove the duo from their position as closest rivals Grant and Ian Sherrin sit more than 100 points behind them. Anthony and Kyle Alford are third outright after a podium finish in the previous round in Ipswich.
