Twigg aiming for three in a row

CAMS Australian GT Championship Endurance leader Max Twigg firmly believes that he and co-driver Tony D’Alberto can with their third consecutive endurance race at next weekend’s Shannons Nationals in Phillip Island.

The pair were victorious in last year’s season finale at the Highlands before starting the 2018 GT endurance campaign with a win at The Bend Motorsport Park in April.

With both drivers currently in good form, Twigg believes they are every chance to win the round and continue their impressive streak.

“I think with how we’re both driving. I don’t see why we can’t go three in a row,” Twigg said.

“I am driving better than I have ever driven and I think Tony is right amongst that car now. He is confident in it.

“We have driven solid as a pairing so far and I don’t see why this weekend should be any different.”

With D’Alberto and Twigg’s performance going strong, Phillip Island provides the duo with the perfect setting for the race, with the iconic circuit acting almost as a “home track” for Twigg.

“I only live about an hour away from the track so I have done a lot of time there. It may as well be my home track,” Twigg explained.

“I have done a lot of laps in the GT car and Tony was good there last year with practice and qualifying, so I think we will be strong there.”

Despite the duo’s ability at the Island, The WA Waste Management Services team were unable to find their groove in the corresponding round last year, finishing a disappointing tenth.

A strong start in the race was ruined when the weather changed and they were unable to make the pivotal tyre change, causing a drop in the field and a loss of vital points.

This time round, Twigg is adamant that they’re better prepared, and with their Mercedes Benz AMG GT in good shape, last year’s disappointing result will not be repeated.

“Our tyre pressure were nowhere near where they should have been,” Twigg said.

“We just didn’t have the pace. It was an error in type pressure settings that caused us to lose. It won’t happen again this year.

“Our car is better now that it was then. It‘s shown in the last couple of rounds that we have done.”

With the championship’s final round at the same track where they began their winning streak, a win at next week’s Nationals will put them in the box seat for the endurance title.

Twigg and D’Alberto currently lead the CAMS Australian GT Endurance Championship on 315 points, with overall GT Championship leader Liam Talbot and his endurance co-driver on 282.

The Shannons Nationals at Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit take place on 1 -3 June, with live coverage of Sunday’s session once again to be available for viewing via speedseries.com.au.
