Towe and Singleton take Heritage titles

David Towe and Ed Singleton have been crowned champions of their respective categories in Heritage Touring Cars Group A and C following an entertaining fifth and final round at Sandown Raceway.

After an extremely consistent season, Towe was in prime position to claim the Group A title heading into the final round at Sandown, sitting in outright first with a solid gap over second placed David Paterson.

Opening his 2018 campaign with an outright fourth place finish at the Shannons Nationals at Tailem Bend, Towe found himself vying for top spot with eventual runner-up Paterson after a solid second round.

His title aspirations suffered a heavy blow when he was unable to attend the third round, dropping 30 points behind Paterson, but he bounced back in style at the next round to claim his first outright victory for 2018.

With Paterson not attending Sandown, the New-South-Welshman only needed to finish the event to become champion, which he did with ease, ending a 14-year trophy drought in the process.

“It was a bit of a shock to finally crack it again but it feels really great to be a Group A champion, it’s been a few years since I last did it which was 2004,” a relieved Towe said.

“I was starting to think it would never come again to be honest because I have contributed a considerable amount of time and effort to compete in the series.

“After round three, I didn’t think I had a chance anymore and I had given it away after completely missing the race meeting but a spectacular round four in Baskerville and I was really proud of that whole weekend.

Despite Paterson not attending the final round, he was still able to secure second place, while Tony Pallas rounded out the podium.

Unlike Towe, Singleton’s Group C victory took a little bit more work with the Holden VH Commodore pilot needing all five rounds to be crowned champion.

It was a disastrous start to the 2018 campaign for Singleton, retiring from the opening round to scoring no points before two sensational rounds in New South Wales and Queensland saw him climb 20 positions into third and back in the hunt.

A solid result in Baskerville set up dramatic final round between Singleton and fellow title contender Neville Butler which Singleton eventually won, taking out top honours in the process.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to be the champion of Group C this year. This is my tenth season racing in that car so to have capped it off this year was very exciting,” Singleton said.

“It’s about consistency in historic racing and I have  a great team behind me and the car preparation was fantastic this year

“We had some great successful races after South Australia which has a lot to do with winning the title.”

With Butler’s Sandown performance confirming his runner-up finish, Tony Sawford managed to secure the final step on the Group C podium.

The category’s entertaining season kicked off with the Shannons Nationals’ historic launch of the Bend Motorsport Park in April where they held the honour of being the first ever official category to compete on the new track.

The Heritage Touring Cars Group A and C are yet to finalise their 2019 calendar with an announcement expected to occur in the coming weeks.
