Versa Motorsport has announced that young gun Winston Smith will join the team as part of the S5000 Australian Drivers Championship.
Smith will make his debut for the team at next week’s Shannons SpeedSeries’ visit to the world-famous Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit and will line up alongside Cooper Webster, who is currently sitting in second place on the overall standings after a clean sweep of podiums during the opening round in Tasmania.
The 20-year-old joins the team with plenty of open-wheel experience for his young age, having previously spent time in the Australian Formula Ford Championship – where he finished in fifth place with one win and five podiums.
This won’t be the first time Smith has stepped foot in an S5000 car either, after he was given plenty of track time at the Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania earlier this year as part of the Garry Rogers Motorsport (GRM) Combine.
The Victorian will also enter the round with plenty of confidence having had a good record at Phillip Island, including a second place during qualifying in the last Formula Ford round there.
But this time, Smith will join the likes of Joey Mawson, Aaron Cameron and James Golding in what is expected to be a competitive line-up at the Island next week.
Tickets for the second round of the season are still available via motorsporttickets.com.au.
For those who are unable to make the trip to Phillip Island, Stan Sport will provide live and uninterrupted coverage from most of Saturday and Sunday’s action, while 9Gem will also broadcast three hours of Saturday afternoon’s racing.
The second round of the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship kicks off at the Shannons SpeedSeries Phillip Island event on 12-14 May.
