Rejuvenated Perini excited for Radical Cup showcase at SMSP

Reigning Workhorse Radical Cup Australia series winner Chris Perini is looking forward to showcasing the exciting open-cockpit category at the Shannons SpeedSeries’ Sydney Motorsport Park round, Race Sydney, in November.

While this will be the first time that Workhorse Radical Cup Australia has featured on the Shannons SpeedSeries calendar this year, it’s certainly not its first visit to Sydney Motorsport Park.

It kicked off its 2023 season at the popular Eastern Creek circuit back in June, where Elliott Schutte walked away with round honours ahead of Peter Paddon.

Since then, series leader Alex Gardner has dominated the proceedings with back-to-back round wins and holds a healthy 61-point lead at the top of the table.

But before the category returns to Sydney under the Shannons SpeedSeries banner, it will make a quick detour to Shell V-Power Motorsport Park for a round at the Shannons Trophy Series in October.

Making his return for the first time since the opening round will be the rejuvenated Perini, who has been forced to withdraw from the previous two rounds for medical reasons.

The reigning champion was looking forward to joining the Shannons SpeedSeries bill, and believed the category will offer a new perspective on racing.

“The Shannons SpeedSeries has got a great brand name, great exposure and great coverage, there is no doubt it is exciting for our series,” Perini said.

“It will be a fantastic broadcast opportunity, we want to put on the best racing we can, fill the grid and I think the numbers going into November are very solid.

“I’m pumped about it, it’s always a well-run round and the other support categories are very entertaining as well.

“I think the category is different to standard sedans, tin tops or even formula cars. Radicals are for motorsport purists, and they are super quick. From what they cost to the lap time they produce is unbelievable – I think we are within one second off Supercars at a lot of circuits.

“Everything is factory controlled, it’s a very competitive class, we have different formats and it’s just pure racing. It’s so good to have a category that is so thorough with that, and I think we should have some great racing.”

Perini is confident he will be fully focused on the task at hand – something he hasn’t been able to say for a long time.

“There have been a couple things that have kept me out the last couple of rounds. I have had to commit to work, and I had an infection where I needed a minor surgery on as well, and then I got tonsilitis ahead of round three,” Perini explained.

“I’m feeling like when I got in the car the last couple of seasons there was nothing else on my mind, even a couple of weeks out I was in the zone, but this year there have been a couple of distractions.

“But this sums up how I’ll be heading into these next rounds. By next week I will be a father, it will be my first child and work is easing up so by the time the rounds come, I will be fully focused on the task at hand.

“I have been lacking a full weekend of racing this year, I am really looking forward to it and it is something I feel like I really need.”

Workhorse Radical Cup Australia will feature at Shell V-Power Motorsport Park on 13-15 October as part of Shannons Trophy Series, before joining the Shannons SpeedSeries schedule at Sydney Motorsport Park on 3-4 November.
