It’s been more than three years since Shannons last made its way to Queensland Raceway with the Australian Production Cars’ popular Fight in the Night back in 2019 being the last time.

A lot has changed since the last visit with the most notable being Tony Quinn’s acquisition of the circuit.

Having officially taken ownership in November last year, Quinn has invested more than $10 million to renovate the circuit, with the funds put towards the Paddock and Pit Lane Garages, Spectator viewing areas, disabled access, the Control Tower, the Café and the restrooms.

Earlier this month, Quinn held a free family-friendly Open Day for the general public to show off the renovations.

Taking place over one jam-packed day, the event celebrated the reopening of the Ipswich based circuit and featured a mixture of on track action, pit walks and other activations, all of which helped raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities South East QLD.

Making up the track activity included the Hot Wheels Stunt Team, time comparisons, demonstration laps, Superbikes, V8 and drift experiences and multiple Aston Martin Vulcan Hot Laps, which saw Craig Lowndes behind the premier sports car.

Lowndes wasn’t the only high-profile name in attendance, with former Supercars Championship teammate Jamie Whincup, current Supercars driver Todd Hazelwood and legendary Australian Touring Cars Champion Dick Johnson amongst the guests, while popular TV personality Grant Denyer hosted multiple activations.

Following on from the open day, Quinn was thrilled with the reaction of all attendees.

“It was a resounding success and a great day was had by all. We raised a significant amount for a great cause and my personal highlight was re-opening the Dick Johnson straight with the man himself,” Quinn said.

“Queensland Raceway was first opened in 1999 through the efforts of local enthusiasts and the QLD State government of the time. It is safe to say not a lot has changed at the venue since it was first opened.

“The entire facility needed a complete overhaul. The equipment, buildings, track surface and grounds had been unloved for 10+ years, & it showed.

“The QR team has worked incredibly hard the last eight months and they had a blast seeing the look on spectators’ faces checking out the updated facilities. We are absolutely thrilled with the result, as well as raising in excess of $60,000 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities South East QLD.

“It was a great way to say ‘Welcome to Queensland Raceway’.”

The Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships will be Queensland Raceway’s first major event since the renovations and will take place on 5-7 August.
