As the third edition of the Shannons Nationals in 2018 fast approaches, a visit to Phillip Island promises plenty of excitement.
There will be lots of talking points within the four categories throughout the weekend, including in the 23 strong field of the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia, which celebrates the competition’s 10th anniversary.
Last year, it was West Australian Jordan Love who won the round outright after a sensational comeback in the final race of the weekend, something which Cooper Murray did in this year’s second round at Sandown to take the overall competition lead.
Seventh placed Chelsea Angelo will be looking to make amends after failing to finish at Sandown. The 21-year-old remains confident that she will work her way up the standing based off previous Phillip Island experience.
“We’re going into Phillip island knowing we have a lot more confidence and know we have a lot of pace so we can be at the frontrunners,” Angelo said
The Radical Australia Cup will hold its fourth round for the season as part of the Nationals and Kim Burke currently leads the tournament with two round wins out of three.
While last year’s top four in Michael Shaw, Peter Johnston and Oliver Smith and Tony Haggerty won’t be attending this year, Chris Medland, Sue Hughes and Peter Clare will all be returning to the field after missing the Sandown round.
Aldous Mitchell will be making his first Radical appearance for the year as the Radical Australia Cup will hold one race on both Saturday and Sunday.
The CAMS Australian Formula 4 Championship will also be making its first appearance on the 2018 Shannons Nationals calendar as round 2 of its season.
Currently racing in the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia, Simon Fallon won last year’s overall F4 round in Phillip Island after Liam Lawson, who is currently competing in the German F4, crossed the line first but received a penalty handing Fallon the win.
Cameron Shields leads the competition after a solid first round win at Symmons Plains ahead of Ryan Suhle and teammate Aaron Love.
The final race of the weekend will be the CAMS Australian GT championship with the famous Victorian circuit hosting the second endurance round for the year.
Last year’s corresponding round saw Jaxon Evans and Tim Miles start from sixth and work their way up to win the 500km race, while Rod Salmon took Australian GT trophy honours.
In the 2018 campaign, Liam Talbot leads the series on 563 points ahead of Fraser Ross (502) and Peter Hackett (491), while GT Endurance leader Max Twigg and Tony D’Alberto will be looking to repeat their win from The Bend Motorsport Park.
The CAMS Australian GT Trophy series will have three races across the weekend while 45 entrants will tackle the final race of the weekend, the CAMS Australian GT Endurance championship.
The Shannons Nationals at Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit will take place on 1 -3 June, with live coverage of Sunday’s session available on speedseries.com.au.
