The Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters Series will resume its 2022 season this month at the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships.
And while some drivers might feel like they are starting all over again given it has been two months since the last round, it will literally be the debut round for Cameron McConville.
A vastly experienced driver in his own right, the Victorian will drive Ian Woodward’s 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS at the Sydney event.
It’s a match made in heaven as McConville was keen to compete in the series, while Woodward was keen to get involved in the series and have someone drive his car.
With the assistance of ACM Auto Parts, Zagame House and MSC Signs, the duo secured a place in the series for the rest of the year.
Despite being extremely busy with his new job as the Motorsport Manager for the Porsche Centre Melbourne Motorsport team, McConville was keen to get underway and have a crack at the series.
“Ian was keen to see his car on track and I was keen to race, but I was in the process of moving, starting the new role at PCM and it was crazy busy and it just didn’t look like it was going to happen,” McConville said.
“A month ago we reconnected and he told me how much he’d like to see the car back out there. I was able to put the package together with our sponsors and it all just flowed from there. It’s been fantastic.
“I’ve been looking at doing some racing for fun again for a while now and TCM is the perfect place to do it. I’m very grateful to Ian for trusting me with his car and for ‘JB’ (John Bowe) staying on my back and pushing to make it happen, he’s been instrumental in getting me back to racing.
“It’s something I am really looking forward to getting stuck into. TCM is a great series with really good racing, and I know Ian’s Camaro has been very competitive.
“I think it will be a lot of fun and that’s the main thing for me. I can’t wait.”
The second round of the Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters Series will be at Sydney Motorsport Park as part of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships on 27-29 May.
